Hi everyone,

I hope that you’ve had a good week. With the changeable weather we’ve seen over the last few days it hasn’t felt too much like Spring, although the saying “April Showers” has been rather apt! Hopefully the sunshine will make a return for the weekend, and we are looking forward to seeing you on Sunday for our racing on the river. Last Sunday was another beautiful Spring day, with more boats making it out of their winter hibernation. You can read the full race report here https://horning-sailing.club/news/hsc-sunday-3rd-april-2022/ and it was also in yesterday’s (Thursday) Eastern Daily Press (Sport Section). Race results are also available on the HSC website here https://horning-sailing.club/racing-results/

Commodore’s Update

Welcome to everyone, it’s been great to see members getting their boats launched and ready to sail, sometimes fixing a few technical issues and fine tunings being made. We’ve been fortunate to have had a lovely start to the season with good winds and sunshine. Last weekend we saw even more members sailing, which is a lovely sight seeing them making their way round the course, with members sitting back watching from the clubhouse with a cuppa & bacon roll. So, even if you are not sailing, you’re welcome to come down, meet up & have a chat – surely we have one of the best views on the Broads to enjoy the racing from!

The Horning Boat Show and Club Open Day is approaching fast – taking place on 30th April, and your support would be greatly appreciated – please see more below about how you can get involved. Let’s showcase our lovely family friendly Club and attract more members to come and join us. Past experience shows that it is also a really fun day for our volunteers, let’s keep our fingers crossed for some nice weather.

Don’t forget to book your places with the training centre (trainingcentre@horning-sailing.club) and we will need your help again to get boats cleaned and ready for training, as well as your support throughout the season.

Another reminder for the members who have not yet paid their fees for mooring etc, we would be grateful if these could be paid now please, as this causes a lot of additional work for our Secretary & membership secretary, who, like all of us, are volunteers.

I will be away this weekend as Abbey & Anya are at their squad event @ Brightlingsea Sailing Club, which will be another challenge for them sailing on the sea.

Just a reminder, please don’t park too close to the fence as our new hedge plants will get damaged.

I hope all sailing and at the club this weekend have a lovely day.

Keep safe, take care & see you soon.

Regards

Will – Commodore HSC

Rear Commodore’s 8 Knot

We have been continuing to prepare an area next to the boat racks in anticipation of laying some semi hardstanding to make it easier and less muddy to move the boats. This is quite hard work cutting out the existing turf but we are almost there. You will notice the area of bare soil, and no, it is not the start of an HSC allotment. Our next workparty is not until after Easter so I hope everyone can enjoy some good Easter sailing next week.

Looking ahead to this weekend

This weekend is currently looking like sunshine and a gentle breeze – perfect for getting back on the water. We continue with programme A on the River Bure – and don’t forget that there is a lunchtime Crews race, which we’d love to get off the ground this year. So if you usually crew, why don’t you switch over with your helm – and give it a go, it’s only scheduled to be around 20 mins long, but a great chance to informally have a go at racing.

The Horning Boat Show Discover Sailing Day

Plans are in full swing for our involvement in this year’s Horning Boat Show with our Discover Sailing Day on Saturday 30th April. We will be running taster sessions from 10am-4pm, with everyone welcome to come down and give sailing a go, so please spread the word. The resources have been ordered from the RYA and there will be posters available in the Clubhouse this weekend for you to take away and put up wherever you can please. It’s also been advertised in the Horning Reach, with further promotion planned. The sessions will be 20-30 minutes in length, and we are requesting that attendees pay £5 per adult, with accompanied under-16s free, with opportunities for attendees to sign up as members. We also need our members to support the day, as you have done so well over the years. We will be needing helms, crews and other helpers, so if you can help out – please contact Holly on news@horning-sailing.club – these days only work through the fantastic support of our members, so please get in touch if you can come down.

Club Leaflet 2022

I’ve just finished creating the Club’s promotional leaflet for 2022 – we’ll soon have some copies in the Clubhouse, but if anyone would like to know more about HSC, please feel free to send it to them. It includes our Club programme, membership prices, and more information about what we do. You can find it here.

Crewing opportunities

Over the past few weeks I have had a few people say that they are keen to crew, and I know from previous seasons, that there are often helms in need of crews. If either of these sound like you – please email me (Holly) on news@horning-sailing.club and I’ll do my best to coordinate requests.

Remembering Mollie Howes

Sally Dugdale has let us know the following information regarding a memorial service for Mollie Howes, who was a longstanding member of HSC:

Mollie Yensie Howes, née Easton – 26 April 1930 – 10 March 2021

Now that Covid restrictions have been relaxed Paul and I will finally be holding a memorial service for our mum, to which anyone and everyone who knew her is invited. It will take place on Friday, April 22nd at 10.30 am at the church of St Michael & All Angels in Bunwell, the village where mum grew up and to which she returned frequently. Bunwell church is capacious; we feel sure there will be plenty of room. There will be a reception afterward at the nearby Bunwell Village Hall.

Did you know we have a model boat section?

A little-known fleet at Horning Sailing Club is the remote-control model Laser fleet who usually sail on Wednesday afternoons – for more information contact the fleet captain Ron Jackson on rc-captain@horning-sailing.club

HSC 200 Club

Fifteen numbers totalling £320 are drawn each quarter with a top prize of £75. If you would like to join the 200 Club the new HSC 200 Club application forms are now on the notice board on the back wall of the Clubhouse. Alternatively you can speak to Will.

Easy Fundraising

We’ve seen a flurry of new sign-ups to Easy Fundraising through online shopping the past week or so – it’s really easy to do, and when you shop online, you raise funds for HSC – there’s also a ‘Spin to Win’ game running for the next week or so, where every time you spin (you usually get one spin a day) – you could win up to £50 for HSC. If you haven’t signed up yet, you can do so here: https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/horningsc/
