Hi everyone,
We hope that you’ve had a good week - after Keelboat Weekend last weekend (full results available here), we are back to our usual programme this weekend, with our Sundown Series on Saturday (4pm) and racing on the river Sunday. With the warm weather forecast, it’s a great opportunity to get on the water. We will also have paddleboarding on Monday evening (6pm start)
We’re now looking ahead to our annual Regatta Week, which is less than a month away – this takes place from Saturday 29th July – Friday 4th August. For those of you that are less familiar with Horning Week or simply would like to find out more, we’ve created a guide to the Regatta, which you can download here. We would also like to encourage you to book onto our social events – there is more information via the poster below and in the guide above; the posters will also soon be up in the Clubhouse.
Commodore’s Update
The weekend saw the Keelboat Open event sailed on the river, due to the weed problem still on the Broad - this will be closely monitored, with Horning Regatta Week not that far away now. Just to give advance notice that Commodore’s Day will be slightly later than normal, as Abbey will be representing HSC in the ITCA Topper Nationals at Pwllheli.
Due to the bad weather Paddleboarding was cancelled on Monday.
Also on Monday the Management Committee met to discuss the way forward for the club following Snowflakes SC decision to change venue for this winter’s season.
On Friday the Club hosts the Strawberries & Champagne event in aid of the very worthwhile Benjamin Foundation charity, being hosted by Mandi Goshawk.
On Saturday we have the Sundown Series from 16:00 to 18:00hrs, again help is required please.
At the weekend Abbey represented HSC in an ITCA GBR invitation only Topper training event at Poole Yacht Club, where the main coach was Paralympian Helena Lucas - a great weekend sailing close to Brownsea Island.
Looking ahead to this weekend, on Sunday Abbey & Anya will represent HSC at the ITCA Topper Traveller in Lowestoft being hosted by Royal Norfolk & Suffolk YC, good luck to them both.
I hope you all have a great weekend

Vice-Commodore’s Clew
You should all have the Horning Week programme now elsewhere in this edition of Jibsheet. Take a look at the social events we have planned, and I hope you will be coming to all of them, and check the 2 events which require pre booking for the food options. They are the fish and chips on Monday and the Tex-Mex chilli on Friday. Then let me know your choices and either pay by BACS to Horning Sailing Club Entertainments 20-45-45 63560767 or pay on the night.
Last weekend we had our Film Night, attended by a small and select band of enthusiasts who enjoyed a bit of HSC nostalgia on film and some hot dogs, popcorn and choc ices. This was all to accompany Keelboat Weekend, the details of which will be in this week’s race report.
We have the special event for the Benjamin Foundation this Friday and then we get ready for Horning Week. Look out for notice of work parties as we will need plenty of volunteers to get the Club ready for the main event of the year.

Rear-Commodore’s Update
Izzy and I had a very breezy Keelboat Weekend, Izzy crewing Dominic Copping in Scarce Copper and myself in Chalkhill Blue, with Liz Goodyear. On the Sunday there were 7 Yare and Bures on the water, the most I have seen in a while, which is fantastic to see.
We will both be planning some maintenance jobs prior to the Horning Regatta Week so we will keep you posted. If you feel that you could help in any way then that would be great. There are often jobs that can be done at anytime, not just on work party days - every little helps as the famous supermarket states.
Please bear with us as we are finding something new to our roles on a weekly basis. If you don’t know what we look like, please ask about and come over and introduce yourselves... we would love to know all our members as this is a community that we both treasure.

Horning White Boat Fleet news update – by Fleet Captain, Liz Goodyear
On Saturday 1st July after racing the Horning White Boat Fleet held their ‘slightly’ overdue Annual General Meeting! It should have been held on Friday 3rd April 2020 but had to be postponed because of Covid!!! The meeting started with outgoing Captain Dominic Copping paying tribute to Hugh Tusting – and how fitting that in the last race of the day Brimstone (36) helmed by Jeremy came first! Everyone in the Horning White Boat Fleet have their own memories of sailing against Hugh but also high up on the list was when he won the prestigious Gold Cup at Wroxham and came back on Badger with the Trophy displayed on the roof.
Dominic had held the post of Captain for two and half years and commented that throughout that time he hadn’t had to order a reef and wasn’t intending to on Saturday! Liz Goodyear takes over as Captain and it was agreed that she would hold the post until the spring of 2024 to get back in line with the constitution which states an AGM must be held within two months of the end of the financial year which is the end of January! Clive Gardner was elected as Vice-Captain. The White Boat Fleet thanked Dominic for his rather extended stint as Captain!
The White Boats also shone at Keel Boat Weekend with the largest fleet out on the water – seven boats out in one race. I think it was fair to say that everyone helming and crewing alike had an amazing weekend in at times challenging wind conditions which reduced the number of other classes out on the water, although it didn’t seem to reduce the number of day boats adding to the fun! Although some boats chose to reef, most didn’t which made some spectacular sailing with boats on the plane as they came down the Reach towards the finish line – I think some of the helms were remembering their youth at Horning helming or crewing Enterprises! It was also really nice that nearly everyone won a race, showing how evenly matched we all are! It wasn’t until the very last race that the result was decided, making it even more exciting. Both Chalkhill Blue (96) sailed by Liz Goodyear and crewed by Lorraine and James Street and Scarce Copper (30) helmed by Dominic Copping and crewed by Izzy Barham-Brown finished on equal points but the result was decided because 96 had the greater number of firsts! As the now Fleet Captain I would like to thank all the White Boats out on the water at the weekend for the friendly and courteous way that everyone sailed, even when nerves were a bit frayed and conditions a bit fraught! Thank you also to Q who starts with us, sailing in Blue Moon putting up with us – I had a major tussle with him on one of the legs, he was not going to let me beat him (for awhile)! Also thanks must go to Ian Bray and his team on the line for running a first class weekend of sailing!
Liz Goodyear
If other fleets would like to share occasional (or regular) updates in Jibsheet, we would love to hear from you!
Champagne & Strawberries event in aid of the Benjamin Foundation
On Friday 7th July there will be a champagne & strawberries event hosted at Horning Sailing Club in aid of the Benjamin Foundation. We hope that you will support this worthy cause. Tickets are available from Mandi Goshawk (01692 630974 or ajgoshawk@yahoo.co.uk)
Helm & Crew Opportunities
Don’t forget that I am co-ordinating helms and crews who wish to get on the water... so, if you are a helm looking for a crew, or a crew looking to get on the water now, please contact me (Holly) on holly.hancock@me.com with your requirements and contact details, I will do my best to coordinate these requests. At the moment we have more helms looking for crews, than crews looking for opportunities – so if you are keen to get on the water, it’s a great time to do so!
Could you contribute to Jibsheet?
We are looking for members both young and old to make occasional or regular contributions to Jibsheet – whether it be your sailing journey so far, achievements or experiences, thoughts on your sailing activities, suggestions for what you’d like to see – or simply information you’d like to share with others – please contact Holly if you would like to know more - news@horning-sailing.club
