Hi everyone,

We hope that you’ve had a good week. It was another lovely weekend at Horning Sailing Club, with plenty of activity, including our Club racing on the river Sunday, which you can read about here . Looking ahead to the next few days, there’s a lot planned – including the start of training tonight, and special glasses being awarded on Sunday’s river racing to commemorate the King’s Coronation. Don’t forget that there will also be a flotilla after sailing (more information on this below).

Commodore’s Update

This weekend sees the Coronation of King Charles.  I hope to see members at the Club at the weekend, where there will be special HSC/Coronation glasses to be awarded after sailing on Sunday. There will also be a flotilla at 16:30 from Blackhorse Broad down to just past the Ferry Inn and back to Blackhorse Broad.  It would be great to see a large turnout of boats from HSC, whether sailing or motor cruisers, all decorated up for the occasion. But whatever you may be doing, have a great day and enjoy the extra bank holiday.

Last weekend I was away at Beachy Barracks near Chepstow at the Officers’ Mess with my son Will, Immy & Abbey, where we were both celebrating our Birthdays, a fabulous time in a superb location, with lovely weather also.

It’s only a month away from our famous 3 Rivers Race, this is the Club’s flagship event.  Please sign up for galley duties or volunteer to sell programmes on the day - contact Kevin Saunders and the Fields Family, all help will be greatly appreciated.

For the Topper sailors we have a Training Day on Saturday 13th May, which currently has a waiting list; also a Traveller on Sunday 14th. To enter please go to ITCA GBR website  Calendar (itca-gbr.co.uk) You will see this event at HSC, any problems or queries please feel free to contact me.

This Thursday sees the start of the Training Centre - it will be great to see both juniors and adults return to resume or start their training. Thanks to Andy and all the instructors, also volunteers.

All queries for wet berth or island dinghy moorings - please speak to Geoff Stubbs or David Gibbs.

This just leaves me to say “Have a great bank holiday weekend, I look forward to seeing you”.

Take care

Will – Commodore HSC

Vice Commodore’s Clew

The big event coming this weekend is obviously the Coronation of King Charles III. I am old enough to just about remember the last Coronation in 1953 and seeing it on a neighbour’s tiny black and white TV but for most it will be a first. We are marking the occasion on Sunday by awarding special Coronation glasses to all race winners. However, you can win only one glass each, so if you win more than one race the next glass will be awarded to the second boat and so on. Normal series points are not affected by the special prize arrangements. We hope to be able to award the prizes at the end of racing.

It will be a busy day as you should already be aware of the Horning Coronation Flotilla which starts at 1630 and we are all encouraged to take part with boats suitably decorated. Dressed overall is the proper term but I do not think the Admiralty will be paying close attention so do whatever you like to make your boat stand out with flags etc. Crews dressed overall in suitably themed costume would also look good. We may need some extra volunteers to get all the dories out for towing and to take part in their own right. Let us hope the weather is a bit better than the current forecast.

Coronation Flotilla

I am organising a flotilla to celebrate the Coronation.

It will take place on Sunday 7th of May.

It will start from Black Horse Broad Entrance at 4.30pm. We will go through the village to Hobbs Mill just past Ferry Inn and back through the village to Black Horse Broad.

Boats should be dressed with bunting/flags and crew in fancy dress too maybe.

Open to all types of craft.

Ring your bells, toot your horns, wave and cheer.

All craft take part at their own risk.

Please ensure plenty of room between each vessel and adhere to all river safety rules and regulations.

If you can't take part, watch us go by and give us a wave.

Three Rivers Race 2023 – update and volunteer call-out

At just a month to race weekend, I thought it would be good to let you know about the progress that your 3RR Committee is making.

The race entry date has officially passed and we have 107 entries currently being processed.

We have started checking all of our equipment to ensure that it is tip top condition and ready for use for race weekend.  We will be putting together the equipment for our volunteer guard ships in the days leading up to race weekend.

Our volunteer team is a very important group of people and are essential to the continued success of the race.  Every volunteer is hugely important no matter how big or small a role they take on.  We are looking for new volunteers for our guardship teams (with or without a boat) so if you and/or your family and friends can help, please contact me and I can talk through the role.  Otherwise, the other roles across the weekend are varied from selling race programmes, car park duties, tidying the island and helping out in the galley for a few hours.  The high-profile tasks are the guard ships and the galley teams, but there is so much more to do across the weekend.  Please call me (07979 906023) and we can talk about any task and what this entails, hopefully dispelling any thought that a task is difficult for you.

Our merchandise is popular again this year and sales are healthy.  It is not too late if you would like to purchase your own polo shirt just visit our website www.3rr.uk and click on the ‘merchandise’ link to our on-line suppliers.  A perfect gift just in time for Summer.

Competitor or volunteer, let us get together for the race weekend and make the 2023 race a great event and one to remember.

Kevin Saunders

3RR Chairman

Our members’ achievements

Congratulations to one of our younger members, Lily Herring, who has been achieving great success with her swimming -

If you have an achievement you’d like to tell everyone about, please get in touch – news@horning-sailing.club

Helms & Crew opportunities

Don’t forget that I am co-ordinating helms & crews who wish to get on the water... so, if you are a helm looking for a crew, or a crew looking to get on the water, please contact me (Holly) on holly.hancock@me.com with your requirements and contact details, I will do my best to coordinate these requests. At the moment we have more helms looking for crews, than crews looking for opportunities – so if you are keen to get on the water, it’s a great time to do so!

Easy Fundraising

If you haven’t signed up yet to support the Club through online shopping, you can do so here at https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/horningsc/ - a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us in this way!
