Hi everyone,
It’s hard to believe that the year has been racing by so quickly and that we are almost into September already – although, with the nights drawing in fast, this means that some of our evening activities are drawing to a close, including training, with our final session this coming Thursday, 1st September. Having said that, other club activities are still fully underway and we’ve had a great week, including last Saturday’s work party and Sundown Series, a Downriver race, a very popular Paddleboarding session, a sailing taster day with Ukrainian children and their families, and Training! You can read Sunday’s race report here and a report on the Ukrainian sailing day here.
We are also in need of willing volunteers to keep our sailing activities going, and as the season goes on, our Secretary, Anne, is finding the duty rota harder to fill. We have incredible volunteers at HSC and this is what makes our club so special – and we are truly grateful to you all for all your efforts, with some members going way above and beyond to make activities happen for others. Even if you have already done a duty this season, please step forward if you can do another – we are in desperate need of PBL2 skippers for this coming Sunday 28th August, and skippers and crew for the following week’s River racing, 4th September. Please help if you can, so that we can all enjoy being on the water – you can contact Anne on secretary@horning-sailing.club
Commodore’s Update
Another busy week, on Saturday I attended the work party - Peter will update you on this, also running our Sundown Series which saw a good turnout. The gusts were strong, which saw the dinghies planing down the river with some spectacular death rolls, fortunately nobody was hurt or boats damaged. Thanks to all who helped including young Edward Street, who, after his capsize, came & helped run the line, he did a great job.
On Monday there were 22 people enjoying a night paddleboarding, with several juniors then having a water frolics session, a great time was had by all, & best wishes to Jasmine who was celebrating her 13th birthday (look out, mum & dad - the teenager has arrived!)
On Wednesday I was back down the Club where we welcomed some Ukrainian children with parents, along with Barrie & his team from South Norfolk & Broadland Council who look after the settlement of families coming over from Ukraine. Rodney Storey arranged the visit through the Council via Barrie & Roisin, and Wymondham Rotary Club. The children had great fun, as did the adults, they enjoyed going out in various dinghies & keel boats, with water frolics at the end. My thanks to the large number of volunteers who came to help, making it a very successful day, with our juniors enjoying the day as much as our guests. It was good to talk to the parents who explained first-hand the experiences they have endured & the hard decision to leave their country, families & friends.
Last night (Thursday) I was down helping with the Training Centre.
It will be good to see you Saturday for our Sundown Series. Help is required on rescue, so please come & help.
Can I please ask members to keep the Island tidy & place rubbish in the bins, as plastic bottles, cans sweet & other items have been left all over the dinghy park & on benches, please also return cups & glasses to the galley.
As a reminder the Club is able to keep its fees at a reasonable level only if members come & help. If we have to get work done by outside companies, it costs the Club (you as members) dear, so fees would have to rise to cover our costs. We are a volunteer run club, so please come forward & help - there are several members who continually help, so let's take the pressure off these members & let others do their bit, it’s your Club too.
I hope you all have a great weekend / Bank holiday.
Take care & keep safe.

To last year’s Trophy Winners
We’re nearly into September, and before you know it, it will be the end of the season. Can you please make sure your trophies have been engraved and handed back to the Trophy Secretary, Adrian Tooke, in good time so we don’t have to chase after them at the last minute. If there is no space left for engraving, the Club will pay for a new plinth (but not for the engraving), so can you please get a separate quote for that or talk to Adrian about it. Adrian’s contact details are:-
adrian@mydigitalhomeuk.com 01603 739206. Thank you.
Anne (Hon. Sec.)

Splash sighted on Downriver – from Ron Jackson
I didn’t think a Splash would have been allowed on Sunday’s Downriver – it wouldn’t - so Katja decided to make her own!
A touristy shot of the mill accidently caught the moment she entered the water. (Thankfully all ended well).
Great shot Ron! Any captions? 😊
