It’s been another good week at Horning Sailing Club with our Sundown Series continuing in breezy conditions last Saturday, racing on the Broad Sunday, paddleboarding Monday and training last night. We’re also fortunate to have had such glorious weather over the last few days – which really makes us think about getting on the water and having a good time!
This weekend sees the Sundown Series continue tomorrow, with a Down River race to Thurne on Sunday. In the usual way, if you intend to take part, we would be grateful if you could please email racing@horning-sailing.club. If you are not planning to be at the in-person briefing at 9.30am Sunday morning (at the Club), please include a mobile number and we will send the briefing via text. The OOD is Geoff Stubbs.
Commodore’s Update
What a lovely week we have had, plenty of warm sunshine with some nice winds, with members out on their motor or sailing boats making the most of it.
Thursday was buzzing with the Training centre, with all the groups out on the water, help is always required with getting ready & packing away, so please offer your help. This week also saw a sunny evening with some good wind, which lessened as the evening went on.
Saturday was a busy day with the start of phase 2 of the dinghy surface starting, followed by the Sundown afternoon series with a good turnout. Racing starts @ 16:00 on Saturday so come down & join in whether a keel boat or dinghy it’s open to all, or just come down sit back & relax & watch some racing it will be good to see you.
Sunday saw racing on the Broad - another good turnout with our 3 back-to-back races & new time sequence that’s working well. The weed however is a curse not only to sailing boats, but also to the dories. Any rescue crews please regularly check the props & remove all weed.
Paddleboarding Monday saw a lovely sunny evening with members enjoying a nice evening on the water. Come down & join in, help is also required please on rescue. Session runs from 18:00 to 20:00hrs so please be ready for an 18:00 start.
Saturday will be busy with HSC hosting a Sailability session for the UEA 12:00 to 16:00, it will be great to see some of the students with varying conditions be able to enjoy & take part in sailing. This will be followed by the Sundown Series.
Sunday will see a down river to Thurne, let’s hope the forecast improves.
The Summer Social is after sailing on the 02nd July, more details to follow shortly, so put the date in your diary.
Anya Gittins will be travelling to Grafham to take part in the RYA Nationals again, as Abbey & Anya did last year, so we wish her well and hope she has a great weekend of racing, representing HSC.
Abbey is away at an Army Cadet weekend at Thetford this weekend so can’t make Grafham but will be at Rutland Water SC next weekend taking part in the ITCA NS5 event.
Lily Herring continues in her Paralympic swimming, with this taking her to different parts of the country, Lily is doing fantastically well & we wish her good luck in her events.
If any members are taking part in events whether sailing or not, please let us know as it great to see & share your success.
Liz Ollier still requires working slow cookers, so please speak to friends and family to see if they have one they can donate to this worthy cause. They can be dropped off at the Club & marked for my attention; I will then let Liz know.
For members who are suffering from Covid & other issues, we wish them well & hope they get better soon.

Rear Commodore’s 8 Knot
We were able to make some more progress with the hardstanding last week and you will notice an area which can best be described as work in progress at one end of the storage racks. We did this with just 4 people so imagine how much we could achieve with a few more. I am hoping to get this work finished before Horning Week so we will be calling for more volunteers in the near future. One big push and we can finish the job.
Meanwhile our regular Thursday group is continuing to work away on many of the small, largely unseen, but vital maintenance tasks and are always happy to see new faces of any of you that may have a Thursday morning to spare. Rear-commodore@horning-sailing.club
Looking ahead to this weekend
Saturday – Sundown Series
This Saturday (11th June) sees the continuation of the Sundown Series. This is a very relaxed, informal race series which provides a great opportunity to get on the water. Dinghies and keelboats welcome – and if you’d like to offer crewing opportunities, or offer your services as crew for this, please let me know (news@horning-sailing.club) – as Will has said, we are also in need of volunteers to help keep this going. We will be getting started at approx. 4pm to finish around 6pm. We hope to see you there!

Training Update from our Principal – Andy Barnham
Hi Everyone,
Thursday night training has now started in earnest, we have completed our second week and are finally settling in to the rhythm with our new team. We have a good number of children attending the junior training & the adult keelboat training is all booked up until the end of the season.
Over the Bank Holiday we helped 4 more members & 2 non-members complete their Powerboat 2 certificate, some more to help Anne fill the duty rota!
Prior to the first night’s training, Bob organised our annual taster session for Wroxham Cubs, from which a couple of new members joined the Club & for training. This weekend we will be holding a taster session for some students from the UEA.
I would just like to say a few thank yous to those that have really helped over the last few weeks since I took over the Training Centre. Firstly to Sharon & Paddy for working tirelessly to make sure all the paperwork is up to date & well presented.To Kevin & Stuart for agreeing to be my Chief Instructors & helping to organise the groups. To Vikki & her team of galley slaves, for putting on delicious food to keep both students & instructors happy. Finally, thank you to all the team of helpers & instructors, too many to mention, that work seen & unseen making sure that we are able to run the Training Centre.
Parents, if you feel like you would like to get more involved and help out, please ask at the desk or come & find me on the Island. Any contribution to the evening will be welcome.

Monday – Paddleboarding sessions
Paddleboarding will continue this Monday 20th June 6pm-8pm. Please be ready to go at 6pm and we usually go for a paddle for an hour or so before returning to the Clubhouse. Please bring your own paddleboard, along with leash and buoyancy aid. If you do not have a paddleboard but would like to give it a go, please let us know and we’ll do all we can to accommodate you. Remember that to get on the water you’ll either need a Broads Toll or British Canoeing membership (which covers your Broads toll). We look forward to seeing you there! Again, we are in need of volunteers to keep these sessions going, so please get in touch if you can help.
Yeoman Regionals at NBYC, 25-26 June – from Toby Fields (Y9)
The Yeoman Nationals have been replaced from this year by a regional championship. The Broadland regionals are being held at NBYC in 2 weeks’ time. The Regionals/Nationals are an event for club sailors, you do not have to be an elite helm in order to enjoy this event. It is a nice change to race in a larger combined fleet, likely to be around 20-30 Yeomans in total. You must be a member of the YK Association to participate, this can be done by contacting the Secretary in advance on ykassociation@hotmail.com
I am planning to attend this event and have the ability to tow a couple of extra Yeomans on the Saturday morning should anyone else need to get there. In addition, Steve Middleditch will be doing a tow at some point on the Friday before. Please let me know if you need a tow up and on which day, Friday or Saturday, so we can make arrangements to get boats moved.
NBYC are looking for rough numbers so they can accommodate us with moorings. If you are planning to attend please let me know on tfields9@hotmail.co.uk . NBYC supported us well last year for our championships with 7 visitors attending, it would be great to be able to reciprocate.
