Dear all,
It has been a week of little activity at HSC as events were cancelled as a mark of respect in memory of Her Majesty The Queen, but this week will see events making a return.
This Saturday sees the rearranged Junior Regatta and on Sunday a Down River race to Thurne. Given these activities, there will not be a Sundown Series this weekend. As usual, if you are intending to enter the Down River, please could you email racing@horning-sailing.club with your boat, sail number, helm & crew and, if you wish us to update you with the briefing via text, a mobile number. If you would prefer to attend in person, there will be a briefing in the Clubhouse at 9.30am Sunday morning. The OOD is Ezra Bailey.
The following weekend sees Open Dinghy Weekend (24th/25th September) on both the River and Broad. Please keep a look out for our rearranged Bart’s Bash date.
Commodore’s Update
Due to the death of our Queen last week and in a mark of respect we did not send our normal Jibsheet, so this week I have included news from last week. We as a nation are still in mourning, with the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday 19th. Events will run this weekend at the Club and I ask that we continue to show our respect for our Queen & the Royal family at this time.
Yet another week has flown by - before the school holidays were over, Abbey & myself took the opportunity on Friday 02nd September to do the rare event and sail my boat, a lovely afternoon was had.
Saturday 03rd September saw an early start down to Oulton Broad to Waveney & Oulton Broad Yacht Club for the Broadland Youth Regatta. We took a team of 10. It was a hot & sunny day with good wind. As Commodore I was so proud of our juniors, how they represented our Club & the excellent team sprit they showed. They all did superbly with HSC coming second, an excellent result & well done to them all. Thanks also to WOBYC for hosting the event.
Saturday & Sunday (03rd & 04th) saw the White Boat Open take place on the Broad. Well done to all who took part, also Stuart & his team for running the event.
Sunday racing (04th) was on the river for the other fleets & dinghies, and was another hot day with varying winds. Thanks to Anya & Tallulah for taking our new members’ two daughters Isla & Millie Johnson, who were watching the dinghies racing & said they would love to do that, so I asked them if they could take the girls out on the water, they went out & were soon helming under the instruction of Anya & Tallulah, both girls returning with massive smiles & wishing to do it again, wanting to join the training next year.
Monday (05th) saw the last of our Paddleboarding sessions, with over twenty people turning out, a night of great fun - it saw all ending up in the water. We look forward to continuing next year. If you would like to come along & join in, look out for when we announce the start in 2023.
Our congratulations & best wishes go out to Joel & Zoe Bailey who got married on Sunday 11th September.
Our AGM will take place on 07th October at 20:00 in Horning Village Hall. It will be good to see members attend - details will follow soon.
The End of Season Dinner will be held at The Wroxham Hotel, Hoveton on Saturday 08th October – 19:00 for 19:30 start, and the Prizegiving/Officers’ Handover will take place at The Boathouse, Ormesby Broad, on Saturday 29th October, again 19:00 for 19:30. Details will follow shortly.
I would like to send on behalf of myself & HSC our sincere condolences to Bob, Christine & Holly (Hancock) following the sad loss of his mum Val on 12 September. A lovely lady who reached her 100th birthday this year.
On Monday, I chaired the Management Meeting. This would have normally been my last, but have agreed to stay on as your Commodore for another year. If you feel you could fulfil the role of Rear Commodore with the help & support of Peter & myself, please contact us to discuss any queries / questions you may have.
This weekend I will be away with my daughter Abbey, who is representing HSC in the Topper NS1 at Lion Barn Reservoir Sailing Club in Surrey.
Commodores Day – Due to attending the Topper Nationals at Weymouth with Abbey, I had to postpone Commodores Day. Apologies for its delay, with various other events etc I have rearranged it for Saturday 01st October 11am – 4pm. It would be great to see you all and hopefully the weather will be kind. Please bring paddleboards & other inflatables for just a fun family day & some fun racing subject to weather. BBQ’s will be available for use with some snacks and sides provided; please bring cakes to share.

Rear Commodore’s 8 Knot
I have decided to cancel the planned working party for this weekend, 17 September, as the postponed Junior Regatta is now taking place on Saturday. I will let you know if we decide to have another working party before 01 October, which is our next scheduled date. The Thursday working group have been continuing with their regular work and are always ready to welcome new volunteers.
Recently I had all the small fire extinguishers which are carried on safety boats checked. They should all have a plastic tag fitted to prevent the trigger pin falling out, which may then lead to the trigger being depressed and inadvertently firing. The extinguisher then has to be replaced. We now have a small supply of spare tags, so if you are on a safety boat duty and notice there is no tag on the fire extinguisher, please let the OOD know so that a new tag can be fitted. They are kept in the shed.
One further point on safety boats: the dories are all being fitted with a manual bilge pump push button switch which you will find next to the power switch. Dories 2 and 3 have been fitted and Dory 1 will be fitted next week.
I was recently asked why I call my piece 8 knot. Well, we all tie a figure eight knot at the end (rear) of our jib sheets. Got it? Have a good weekend, whether on or off the water.
