Hi everyone,
It’s been another good week at HSC – with plenty of activity. Last Friday night was a very successful champagne & strawberries fundraiser for the Benjamin Foundation, on Saturday we held a work party followed by our popular Sundown series, on Sunday we ran Club racing, Monday was paddleboarding night. Wednesday we ran a taster session for Salhouse Cubs and on Thursday training. You can read the full race report for last Sunday’s racing here.
We have another busy week planned with a work party followed by the Sundown series tomorrow (Saturday), Club racing on the river Sunday, paddleboarding Monday, and training Thursday. As the temperature is set to soar over the next few days – whilst being on the water is a great place to cool down, it is going to be warm, so please be prepared.
We are currently gearing up for Regatta Weekend and Regatta Week, which take place on 30/31st July and 1-5th August respectively. For those unfamiliar with Regatta Week, it really is a unique occasion – racing starts on Saturday afternoon, and will then be all day every day until Friday. We have the pre-entry forms for racing available via the Downloads section of our website should you wish to do this in advance. Last year’s report should give you an idea of what to expect – see here. There’s also plenty of opportunities to catch up with friends or enjoy the great evening socials (full programme and booking to follow shortly). Thursday sees the Horning Town Open Regatta – and we would please request that you support our Regatta Week Presidents, Karen & Alastair Fields, who will be putting on a reception (all welcome). For younger sailors, the morning races are the perfect opportunity to get on the water whilst the river is quieter, and this is a great introduction to racing. I’m also looking to coordinate helm/crew requests for Regatta Week – and, particularly for newer members/those undertaking training, if you are keen to sail during the week, please let me know your availability and I will endeavour to pair you up with a helm – please email Holly on news@horning-sailing.club
Of course, as with all club activities – Horning Week is completely run by volunteers – and this relies upon your help to make it happen – so we would ask you please to do a rescue boat/galley duty during the week. Powerboat helms need their Powerboat Level 2 qualification, but crews do not, and we would be so grateful for your help. You can sign up directly to the rota here, email me (Holly) and I will add your name to the rota, or sign-up in the Clubhouse.
Adrian Tooke, our Trophy Secretary has also requested that trophies should be returned to the club nice and polished in preparation for Horning Week prizegiving please – many thanks.
Commodore’s Update
Welcome to this week’s Jibsheet, I hope you have been enjoying the warm & sunny weather, but remember to drink & keep hydrated, use sun cream, hats etc to keep yourselves safe.
Our Regatta Week is nearly here, details will be sent out shortly where you can book in advance, and help will be required on rescue throughout the week, also in the galley & other duties, so please come forward & help, if we all do our bit it spreads the load & all can enjoy the week. Please also give support to Karen & Alastair Fields our Regatta Presidents.
During racing on the river & as a reminder for our Regatta Week, please observe Rule 2 & do not force motorboats out into the middle of the river. Motorboats will be requested to keep to the right-hand bank. I will ask rescue boats to monitor behaviour on the water, let’s all have fun so all can enjoy the water & respect each other. We will have members who are new or not quite as experienced in racing, let’s help & give them support & politely advise, we all have been there.
Last Thursday evening after training, the Race Management team met and, it was decided, as you will have seen in the email sent, that racing has been brought back onto the river to ensure we can deliver safe racing. Whether Regatta Weekend can go ahead on the Broad will be decided shortly. Some members may be upset by this, I hope you understand why this decision was made, this will be kept under review.
On Friday, in the sweltering heat, Peter & I completed the first section of the new surface under the dinghy racks. Then, in the evening, HSC hosted the Benjamin Foundation’s charity event, with over 100 people attending, arranged by Mandi Goshawk, it was a beautiful sunny & warm evening.
At the weekend, I was away at Snettisham Sailing club, where Abbey & Anya represented HSC in the ITCA Topper Training on Saturday, it was very hot with some good wind & the Traveller on Sunday where the day was even hotter with very light winds. The results saw Abbey 11th & Anya 13th out of the 31 sailors racing, Well done to them both.
Monday saw 21 people paddleboarding & again a beautiful sunny & hot evening with water frolics afterwards. If you are interested, please come down & join in, help with rescue would be appreciated.
On Wednesday HSC welcomed Salhouse cub pack for a taster / fun session, thanks to all who came & helped, a good time was had by all.
Members will shortly see 5 new picnic benches at the club, after Anne & myself searched for the right type & quality product. The benches are made from recycled plastic bottles & come with a 25-year warranty & can be recycled at the end of their life. They should be in place prior to Horning Week, so keep an eye out.
A few gentle reminders:
· Can I please remind members not to put bags & wet items, or sit with wet clothing on our newly refurbished seat in the clubhouse.
· Thank you to members who have donated slow cookers, more are still required by Liz Ollier for the charity she is helping, again they can be dropped off at the club.
· A request from Lorraine Street who looks after our first aid kits - if any items are used can you leave details of what kit & item used so we can ensure they are replaced.
· Could members using the club tenders please return then back & not keep them over the river as members have been left without the use of them, they should be returned within 20 minutes.
Tomorrow we are planning to complete the last section of the dinghy rack, on Saturday, please come and help if you can, many hands make light work.
This weekend will see an extreme heat warning, as mentioned above please ensure you drink plenty, wear appropriate clothing etc.
Have a great weekend.

Rear Commodore’s 8 Knot
We did manage to complete another section of the hardstanding last weekend but with a team of only 5 we could not get the whole area finished. We could still do this before Horning Week if a few more people could come and help this coming Saturday. I know Will is very keen to see the job finished. The very hot weather is not due to arrive until Sunday/Monday so some moderately heavy manual work should be possible without serious risk of heat illness.
I had the clubhouse security alarm system checked on Monday and everything worked as it should. We may need to move some furniture in the starter’s box as it is blanking the sensor.
It is now just over 2 weeks to Horning Week and the weekend before that I will be seeking your help again to get the club island looking shipshape by cutting grass and general tidying. I know that means working the next 2 Saturdays if we do the final hardstanding as well, but we will all then be able to take a well earned break and enjoy Horning Week with the Club and surrounds looking every inch the part.
Finally, if you are out and about on the water in the very hot weather make sure you protect yourself with high factor sunscreen and drink at least 2 litres of non alcoholic fluid during the day (you can have the stronger stuff once the sun is over the yardarm).
