It was a busy weekend at Horning Sailing over the weekend of 24/25th June, with several different activities taking place. Saturday saw the Club’s annual Pursuit Race, having moved from its usual early in the season slot, resulting in a very warm day, and extremely light winds. With a mixed fleet of Toppers, Splashes, Lasers, Yeomans, a self-built boat, a Reedling, Yare & Bure and Sailing Cruisers – it was going to be interesting to see who came out on top after almost an hour’s racing. The aim of a Pursuit race means that the slower boats start first, and then the remainder of the fleet is started at intervals so that whoever crosses the line in first place is the winner. First away were the three Toppers of Anya Gittins, Lily and Jasmine Herring who, despite swapping the lead amongst themselves the whole time, managed to hold onto the lead for the entire race, finishing in that order – much to their delight. The second race also saw the youth dominate – with James Street, sailing his Laser, making his way to the front of the fleet, followed by Hamish Harmer sailing his Splash. In third place was Robert Hancock sailing Reedling Siskin. Racing was followed by an enjoyable Summer Social.

Sunday was a down river race to Thurne. Whilst still very warm, this saw a good breeze, which picked up even more during the course of the day. Starting from the Horning Waterworks, it was mainly a beat to Thurne. Despite this, it was an extremely quick leg, the lead cruiser, Peter Goshawk’s Grayling, taking just over 50 minutes to make it there! The return was even quicker – Grayling making it back in under 45 minutes to Woods Dyke – winning both legs overall. In the keelboats first on handicap both there and back was Geoff Stubbs in Yeoman Tara, and lead dinghy both ways was Jasper Copping sailing a Norfolk Dinghy.
