Sunday started bright and breezy for Horning Sailing Club’s racing on the river. Although the forecast had predicted showers all day, thankfully these held off until the afternoon, allowing some good racing to take place during the morning. With more boats out of their winter hibernation and the sailors keen to be back out on the water, there was close racing in the Yeomans, Yare & Bures and dinghies.
First away in the challenging and gusty winds were the Yeomans, the first race seeing Toby Fields (Tanskey) and Geoff Stubbs (Tara) leading the fleet, having broken away on the first lap. The second race saw even closer racing as the wind dropped, particularly in the Yeomans, where, having led for the majority of the race, it came down to the final leg as Tara was gaining on Tanskey, eventually just one second separating the finishers, with the win going to Tanskey. The afternoon race was won by Steve Middleditch sailing Scorpio.
The Yare & Bures saw Liz Goodyear (Chalkhill Blue) take an early lead, with close competition from both Kevin Saunders (Silver Cloud) and Alastair Fields (Rosy Wave), with Rosy Wave eventually taking the win in all three races.
The dinghies were as competitive as ever, with nine taking part, ranging from Splashes to Lasers and a Topper. In the morning series both Chris Bolton (Laser) and Harrison Ryder (Laser Radial) took a win, with Hamish Harmer (Splash) winning the afternoon race.
During the afternoon series, the predicted rain arrived, along with lighter winds, which had an impact on turnouts. Despite this, a good day’s racing was enjoyed.
