The big news of the weekend at Horning Sailing Club over 9/10 September was the success of the Club’s young sailors at the Broadland Youth Regatta, hosted by Norfolk Broads Yacht Club, winning for the third time in the Club’s history!
Back at HSC, racing took place on the Broad on Sunday in very warm weather and variable winds – the water resembling a mill pond at times, at other times there being a relatively brisk breeze making it challenging for the Officer of the Day, who needed to change the course for each race given the shifty conditions. In the Reedlings, there was close competition between Robert Hancock in Siskin (crewed by Tom Roberts) and Stuart Bailey in Jaws (crewed by Ann Beckett), particularly in the last race where Stuart led for almost the whole race before being overtaken on the final leg, Robert making it three wins out of three during the morning.
Entertainment was provided in the Yeoman fleet, as in one of the races the lead boat did not notice the change of course and sailed the wrong course, only realising at the finish line! Paul Clarke and Andy Tabiner in Two C Sons also made it three wins out of three races, with Geoff and Michael Stubbs (Tara) receiving two second places and a third, and Allan Dornan and Maria Spreadbury (Nimrod) a second and two thirds. The Rebels saw Kevin Edwards and Tim Wildman (Rebel Maid) win all three races, Kim West and Ella Middleton (Rebel) second, and Gary Wright (Rebel Jade) third, a pattern repeated across all the races. Both Yare & Bure races were won by Clive Gardner and Hilary James (Hairstreak) with Alastair Fields and Kevin Blackwell (Rosy Wave) second. First in the dinghies were Hamish Harmer (Splash) with Anya Gittins (Splash) second, and Clare Whitelegg (Wayfarer) third. Sisters Jasmine and Lily Herring were first and second in the Toppers. The next two races followed the same pattern for the Allcomers B fleet.
Next weekend sees the Club’s Junior Regatta and Open Dinghy Weekend taking place on both the river and Broad.
