Fleets

Horning Sailing Club caters for a large range of craft from dinghies to river cruisers and keel boats to radio controlled boats!   All sailing classes regularly race on both Blackhorse Broad and the River Bure, most Sundays during the sailing season. We also have occasional downriver races.

Our dinghy classes include Oppies, Topper, Laser (Radial and Full rig), Splash and the double handed Enterprise, but we have other dinghies too and racing is done under the Allcomers flags with handicaps.  We have a healthy number of younger sailors who race in the dinghy fleets, many of who have come into the club via our training courses.

Moving on to the keelboats, Horning has a fine fleet of Rebels, a classic half deck, one-design gunter rigged keelboat, designed by Alan Buchanan in 1949. It is actively raced in Horning. The majority of Rebels are wooden hulled, however, since 2008 GRP hulls have been produced.  There are currently 16 Rebels.

The Reedling is a one-design fractional rigged keelboat, designed by Ian Proctor, and built by Reedling Boats (now dissolved) in Horning, Norfolk.  Only 11 were built and most are still local.

The Yeoman is also a one-design fractional rigged keelboat. There are just over 300 Yeomans built, with good sized fleets at Horning, Wroxham, and elsewhere at Rutland and Lough Erne.  For more information see the Yeoman class website:  http://www.yeomankinsman.org.uk

The Yare and Bure is a strict one design classic half deck, gunter rigged keelboat design in 1908.  The majority of YBODs are wooden hulled, however, recently GRP hulls have been produced.  There are currently over 140 Yare and Bures, and new boats are still being added to the fleet. Yares and Bures are actively raced in Horning, and can be seen most Sundays between March and October.  For more information about the class, please see the YBOD class website: http://www.ybod.org.uk

There are also a number of motor boats owned by members of the club and moored on site. They complete annually for the Berry Shield during Horning week.  The motor boat fleet also support our major event - the Three Rivers Race, by providing guard ships at various points around the course.

Another facet to HSC is a growing fleet of Radio Controlled (RC) model Lasers. These 1/4 scale boats are available from several outlets in the UK, have a hull length of just over a metre and are nearly 2 metres tall when ashore on their purpose built folding stand. They are a strict 'one design' and boast a UK National class association and international fleets with championships held all over the globe. 4 different sail rigs allow them to sail in winds varying from a light breeze to some 35 knots,  and when sailed within the bounds of the RYA yacht racing rules on miniature Olympic style courses, offer some very close competition for helms young or old, light or heavy.  For more information about the RC Laser class, please see the class website: http://www.rclaser.org.uk
