Hi everyone,

As it’s been a couple of weeks since our last newsletter there’s plenty to update you on, including a work party planned to take place tomorrow at 10.00am - starting with the latest news from our Flag Officers:

Commodore’s Update

A warm welcome to all our members in this edition of Jibsheet. At the Club we have seen very high water levels with the culmination of the various days of rain & the storms, with the river level to the top of the key heading at the Green.

With the onset of the new Covid variant & the long dark winter nights, if we can all keep an eye out for elderly & less able neighbours & friends to ensure all remain safe & well.

An update of what has been happening - both Peter & myself attended in person the RYA conference held at the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook near Ipswich.  It was good to meet members of other clubs & to hear the various challenges they have faced over this pandemic, also members of the RYA staff. We attended talks & specific workshops, on legal, volunteers, club development, etc.

It was a good day & we must thank both the RYA for an informative day & RHS for their hospitality & wonderful lunch.

As the festive season gets closer, we held our Christmas party for our members at the Club, but keeping everyone safe. Thanks to my entertainment team for all the hard work on Friday evening & Saturday afternoon decorating the club & preparing the food.

Seeing 26 children with adults having a great time, the youngest being three & a half. Games took place with the help of our juniors, before Santa made his annual visit to the Club & handed out presents to all our juniors. Following Santa’s visit we had food provided by the Club this year & my sincere thanks to Vikki, Sarah & their team for a wonderful spread & all their hard work, Robin for arranging the music & Brian for running the Bar. Games continued after the food, with the raffle taking place.

This weekend I will be at Alton Water as two of our juniors - my Abbey, & Anya -continue in the RYA East squad training.

I am always available if members wish to chat about anything.

Please all keep safe & well

Rear Commodore’s Update

There have not been any work parties since the last Jibsheet, but we have one planned for this Saturday (11 December) at 10:00am. The task is to clear overgrown vegetation around the perimeter of the car park. At the time of writing the weather looks fine for a change, so I hope to see a few of you at the Club then.

Congratulations to our Secretary – Anne

Our Secretary, Anne Wagstaff, attended a ceremony in London in November to receive her RYA Outstanding Commitment Award from HRH The Princess Royal. Anne said:

“I had a fantastic day, the RYA looked after everyone receiving awards so well, they made us all feel very special. We were given a beautiful lunch in very glamorous surroundings, and, of course, the highlight was accepting the award from HRH Princess Anne, and having the chance to chat to her afterwards. Having now had time to read the amazing citations of others who were honoured, I feel privileged to have been selected to be in such company, and would like to thank everyone in Horning Sailing Club for their support, especially those who were involved in my nomination.”
