Hi everyone,

Happy New Year! We hope that it’s been a good start to 2022 – and, although the challenging times continue, there is lots to look forward to, including better weather – and getting back on the water. On that note, it’s been encouraging to see so many sailors continue to sail over the winter period, and we’ve also seen some beautiful skies over Horning recently.

Sunset at HSC - January 2022

As we move towards HSC’s 2022 season, we have lots planned to make it a great season. Don’t forget that we have a work party this Saturday from 10am (all very welcome) – but, first, an update from our Flag Officers.

Commodore’s Update

I would like from myself & family to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope you all had a lovely festive Christmas & New Year spending time with loved ones we have missed & not seen for some time. With Covid-19 very much about, hopefully everyone kept safe & well, if you did unfortunately catch Covid-19 we wish you a speedy recovery.

The Management Committee had its first meeting of the year via Zoom with lots discussed, progress is going well with the feasibility of the club becoming a CIO (Charity Incorporated Organisation), we will update members in due course.

A meeting will be held shortly to progress the club house development, which a lot has been going on behind the scenes.

With the new season now not that far away, I look forward to seeing you all soon. We are hoping as last year to run a normal programme with all the events we all love. The Sundown series will continue on Saturday afternoons, as will Paddleboarding on Monday Evenings, as always we need volunteers to come forward & help to make this possible.

Can I please ask members as subscriptions are now due that these are paid promptly, especially if you have or wish to have boats moored at the club, to save our secretary & membership secretary a huge amount of work emailing & phoning members.

Before Christmas & last weekend I was at Alton Water & Royal Harwich Yacht Club respectively where my daughter Abbey & Anya Gittins have been continuing in the RYA East Squad, they are both doing fantastically well & representing our club & hope to also attend National events.

Our galley team are looking forward to the new season & to expand on what they can offer, they did an excellent job for us last season.  If you would like to get involved please contact Vikki Gittins, who would love to hear from you.

Don’t forget HSC regalia can be found online or contact Pauline Bourke.

The Defibrillator is currently away for its servicing & will be back shortly.

As always my door is open if any members wish to discuss a problem or have any suggestions please contact me.

With Covid still around & the guidance / rules continually changing, I would ask members to respect each other & take precautions so we can all enjoy coming to the club.

We have identified boats that have not had mooring fees paid, also others which do not appear to have owners.  If owners cannot be traced or fees paid these will be sold & removed. We need every available space for our increasing membership.

As I am also carrying out the Vice Commodore’s role, the Ents team will meet shortly to continue its planning for the new season. We now have our own Tablet & I-zettle card reader so, as last year, we can offer the facility to pay for not only your drinks at the bar but for all Ents activities, my thanks to Stuart Bailey for facilitating this, also changes have been made to the bank account with also online banking, bringing us into the 21st century. We hope this facility will help our members.

Well that is it so far from me, let’s hope we have another great season in this strange old world at the moment.

Keep Safe & keep a watch out for friends & neighbours.

See you soon

Will – Commodore HSC

Rear Commodore’s Figure of 8 knot

Our last working party cut back a lot of overgrowth around the perimeter of the club car park and you will notice it now looks a lot tidier. We now have a small pile of brambles to make a bonfire if conditions are suitable.

This weekend’s working party (10:00-13:00) we will be aiming to do some reed and sapling cutting across the river and maybe some painting inside the Clubhouse. A light lunch will be provided at the end of the session.

The Sailing Programme for 2022

The Race Management Committee have been working behind the scenes to plan the sailing activities for 2022 and we are pleased to share our sailing programme with you. There are minimal changes as it worked well in 2021, but there are some minor amendments, including considering trialling condensing the Broad series further following feedback to a 6 minute, 3 minute start sequence – which will reduce the length of time both before, during and after races. The full programme is on the website here and also under the downloads section.

eSailing

Some of you will remember that in 2020 we ran a very successful online eSailing programme – we have the opportunity to be part of the RYA’s eSailing Winter Championships this year, so if anyone would be keen to coordinate this please let me know and I can let you know how it all works: holly.hancock@me.com

Horning Panto

Some of you will remember some of our great trips to see the Horning Pantomime – and this year the pantomime will be taking place in March. Performance dates are Thursday 10th March 2022, Friday 11th March 2022, Saturday 12th March 2022 (matinee and evening shows) and Sunday 13th March 2022 (matinee) at the Village Hall in Horning, Norfolk NR12 8LF

Tickets are priced £6 for adults or £4 for children.

The Sailing Club has traditionally supported this very well – and it would be fantastic for members to support the community once more.  Please feel free to arrange your own groups to attend if you wish. Seats may be booked by calling Christine on 01692 630751, in person at Tidings Newsagents in Horning, or at Abbotts Countrywide Estate Agents in Hoveton.

61st Yachtmaster Insurance Three Rivers Race entries now open
