You know it was windy when most of the keelboats decided not to come out to play, but the dinghies relished every second of being on the water!
It was windy and wild for Sunday’s racing at Horning Sailing Club, with racing having moved to the river given the forecast, and weed on the Broad. With gusty conditions, it was fast and furious with capsizes a-plenty and lots of activity for the rescue boats.
With just four keelboats competing over the course of the day, the main spectacle was the dinghies, with the first race seeing almost the whole fleet capsize on the first tack, before almost the whole fleet capsized on the start of the second race, much to the excitement of the gathering crowd on Swan Green watching the racing. It was a true test of endurance, punctuated with cries of “that was so awesome” as the Lasers, Toppers and Tera flew down the river!
The first race was won by Anya Gittins on handicap, sailing her Topper, with Hamish Harmer (RS Tera) second, and Harrison Ryder (Laser) third. The second race was a win for Hamish, with Anya second and James Street (Laser) third. The final race saw another win for Hamish, with Anya second and Harrison third.
Meanwhile, the keelboats saw the Rebel reef and the Yeomans use storm sails. Gear breakages meant that the first race only saw a Yeoman and Rebel participate. Both the second and third races were won by Paul Clarke in Two C’Sons (Yeoman), with Anaoh (Roger Pettit) second, and Scorpio (Steve Middleditch) third.
